Made From Scratch Chocolate Sponge Cake Recipe

Chocolate sponge cake is a classic recipe. It is simple and easily customized. Various kinds of frosting and fillings can be added to chocolate sponge cake to give it so many different flavor combinations. It can be filled with fruit or topped homemade buttercream. No matter how you choose to dress up your chocolate sponge cake recipe, you will always end up with a delicious dessert.

Ingredients

  • 4 large eggs
  • 110 g sugar
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla essence
  • 110 g soft flour
  • 90 g cocoa powder
  • 25 g melted butter

Instructions

  1. 1. Preheat oven to 180C (356F).
  2. 2. In a mixing bowl, add the eggs and sugar. Beat at high speed for 10 minutes or until batter is thick and fluffy.
  3. 3. Add the vanilla essence and beat more until fully mixed. (If batter does not sink immediately, it is then ready)
  4. 4. In a separate bowl, mix together the cocoa powder with the soft flour. Fold into the batter slowly.
  5. 5. Add in the melted butter and fold into the batter.
  6. 6. Grease the sides and bottom of an 8” cake ring and pour the butter into it ¾ full.
  7. 7. Bake in oven for 25 minutes or until top is firm to touch.
